Margaret Thatcher, a polarising figure within late twentieth century British politics, left an enduring thumbprint on the country. Baroness Thatcher, aged 87, died on Monday, 8 April 2013 from a “cerebrovascular accident” and “repeated transient ischaemic attack”. Secondary causes, according to news reports, were listed as a “carcinoma of the bladder” and dementia.

Love or hate her, regardless of your perspective, no one can deny Thatcher accomplished many things during her lifetime. Thatcher, born on Tuesday, 13 October 1925 in Lincolnshire, was named Margaret Hilda Roberts. Her parents, father and mother, were Alfred Roberts and Beatrice Ethel Stephenson. Alfred and Beatrice were respectively from Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire.

Thatcher’s father owned a tobacconist’s and a grocery shop. It has been suggested, whilst there is no concrete evidence supporting the claim, Coronation Street creator Tony Warren named the corner shop owner Alf Roberts after Thatcher’s father.
