“Bye bye,” those were the first words of a lady who would come to help define a generation of singers. She also told her brother, Richard, to “stop it.” He was teasing her, and the tyke didn’t like it.

Both children were musically inclined. By the time she was four, Carpenter’s parents enrolled her in tap dance and ballet classes. She excelled and seemed to love it. During this time, it was easy for her to make friends.

But that wasn’t going to last for long. Her father received a job offer in June 1963. It required the family to move to Downey, California. Carpenter was forced to say goodbye to her friends. While there was some hope that things would go smoothly for her, that was not to be.

She started high school at the tender age of 14 in 1964. At her new school, Carpenter was a year younger than her peers. It made her something of an outcast. Further, setting her apart was the fact that she didn’t want to participate in gym. Instead, she joined the marching band.
