Autumn is one of the most intense and dog-focused times of year on a husky farm. Whilst we juggle the physical preparation of the dogs, we have to also close out all of the forward-planning projects of the summer before the snows come..
It’s Snowing!
We recently received the first snowfall of the season. As you might imagine, this left both our guides and our dogs very excited. Our dogs have had a long relaxing summer holiday and they are now very eager to get back to doing what they do best, running! Now that the temperatures are consistently below 5C, we can start training with quad bikes whenever the ground is not too icy. However, it is anyone’s best guess at this time of year, as to when there will be enough snow to switch to the sleighs.
Mystical Aurora.
As we approach our winter season, the days are getting shorter and darker meaning that the Northern Lights are becoming clearer and more visible. A couple of days ago we were blessed with a dazzling display of colour in the night sky. Gabin, a friend of the farm (that some clients might also remember from days gone by) who is visiting us, managed to take this amazing photo of the lights above our farm.
Feeling Toasty!
We have been collecting the fur that the dogs loose in the warm summer months and last year we finally got it spun into skeins of wool (with a small amount of sheep wool added to lengthen the fibres). One of our guides, Julia, spent her summer holiday knitting this warm jumper made from Hetta Huskies dog wool!
If you are coming to visit us, make sure you get some of our wool before it all sells out! For those of you who won’t be with us in person this year, we can still send you the skeins of wool if you email us your address and pay, for instance, by PayPal. It will be fun to see how many great products will be made from the hair of the Hetta dogs over time.
