Up to 67% of the youth surveyed said that they rarely or never do sports in their free time.

I conducted a quick survey on a sample of 50 young people aged 18–30 in Ho Chi Minh City, including 49% of men and 51% of women from many different professions.

The survey asked whether respondents are concerned about their health and fitness and whether that interest turns into concrete actions.

Free time often take breaks, go out, drink …

The survey results show that only about 60% of young people said they regularly care about their health and weight. This is a remarkable number because young people are not aware of the factors that make them physically weak, but they do not pay adequate attention to their health.

When asked about what they usually do in their spare time, only 32% of them said they regularly exercise, while 68% said they rarely or never do exercise or sports in their free time.

Thanh Mai, a student from the Binh Thanh District, said: “Young people nowadays often overlook their health, even me or my relatives. They do not pay much attention to physical exercise, eating or regular health checks. In general, being lazy.”

More choices among young people for their free time are relaxing (61%), hanging out with friends (40%) or drinking or drinking coffee (34%).

Exercise: “rejuvenating” remedy

A recent study by scientists at Brigham Young University (USA) said that people who regularly exercise with a frequency of 30–40 minutes jogging a day, 5 days a week will have a younger body than those who don’t exercise.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Tan, 63 years old, said: “Every morning I play with my friends dancing in the park. Every day I spend from 30 minutes to 1 hour to play sports. Because of regular training, I always feel mental comfort, less sick, even though I am over 60 years old.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), regular physical activity has the following benefits: Increasing the development of cardiac muscle and the performance of the heart; reducing blood cholesterol and increasing the elimination of intermediates that cause intoxication; weight loss; reduced risk of thrombosis, a leading cause of embolism; increasing striated muscle development helps vascular systems develop and circulate smoothly, creating mental pleasure, increasing the production of healthy hormones.
