The demoscene — creative computing

The demoscene is a loosely connected world-wide community of enthusiasts around the creation of digital real-time audio-visual art, so called demos. Demos are programs for modern or oldschool computers (such as the Commodore Amiga or C64), often featuring mindblowing soundtracks and breathtaking effects. They got their name because the involved creators use them to demonstrate their skills, competing with their entries in competitions at festivals like Deadline.

Demos, other than normal animation movies, are typically calculated live at the time they run on a computer, instead of being just a pure playback of pre-rendered scenes. This way often even high-end pc hardware is pushed to its limits. The productions are a result of teamwork. For each part specialists contribute their creativity to the final product. It’s common that groupmates from different countries or even continents work together remotely to create a demo, eg. that the graphics are, for example, done in Germany, the music in Sweden and the 3D effects in Canada.

At demoparties like Deadline, the community gathers regularly, to socialize with old and new friends, attend workshops and seminars, and show off their newest creations in the competitions that are held on the big screen.

A deadline to look forward to

Demoparties are non-commercial events organized from within the community, for the community. Seasoned sceners will give seminars and workshops during daytime to share their experience or give an intro to their new tools for creating demos. In the evening DJs from the scene will make you dance, often companioned by live-coded visuals. You can take a break in between and socialize at the bar or at the bonfire outside, or play a round of retro games against your friends.

The final events will be the competitions, where participants show off their new creations and compete against each other in friendly rivalry. All visitors are allowed to bring an entry and to vote on their favorites. The winners take home unique trophies and eternal fame.

Since (moving) images say more than thousand words, check out this video which presents the winners of all of this year’s competition :

After the party, all creations are released online, for everyone to download and comment on. Once you released your creation at a party it’s out there, and you have to create something new for the next one. This way there’s a constant flow of new demos, songs, and artworks released to the community and the general public.

Join the fun

The demoscene is not limited to a few super talented programmers: anyone who is creative and wants to contribute to the demoscene is welcome. Curious and interested people are always accepted. Many demosceners work for game companies, some started their own small businesses. Their know-how is widely requested on the market, not only because of their core tech skills but also for their creative approach to problem-solving.

Here at HeyJobs a couple of currently active and retired demosceners are working in the team and bringing their creativity and love for technology to try to achieve our mission to help people find a better job to live a fulfilling life.

HeyJobs tries to fix the recruitment market by matching companies and talent better than ever before, using state-of-the-art technologies — always striving to find creative solutions for difficult problems.
