Image uploads and new-new embeds

Ladies and gentleman, today we’re giving you a lot of power. Today, you’re gonna be able to upload the living hell out of pictures on your phone and computer.

What, you think I don’t know just how dangerous that is? You think I’m not secretly terrified of the untapped potential that we’ve placed in the hands of possible weirdos and turbo-racists? Oh, I am buddy, I am.

Please think carefully about what you share

We’re also changing the way embeds work (again) but this time it’s going to be great… really. We’re now handling embeds ourselves instead of going through a third-party. This gives us more control over what we embed and how we embed it. It also allows us to make the feeds much faster than they were previously. I know what you’re thinking, “Josh never gives us something without taking something else away. He’s genuinely a monster.” and boy are you right!

Activity posts from this point forward will now show either an embed or an uploaded image (or image gallery) at the bottom of the post. You will no longer be able to embed an image in the middle of your post, or embed a whole series of images with text in-between them. For some of you, this is fantastic news, for others, well — I’m sure we’ll all hear about it soon enough.

As we continue to build on and enhance our gallery uploading functionality, I’m certain it will get to a place where it’s the preferred solution for the majority of our community. In the very near-term, we’re planning on adding caption and source support to your uploaded images.

If you’re a web user, you can start uploading images and checking out the new embeds now. If you’re a mobile user, this update will be live in your app store within the next couple days, but you can access it early by joining the beta program for iOS or Android.
