How Crypto Enables Value Accretion to Neglected Passions and Professions

In a recent article, we talked about crypto’s game-changing ability to broker cheap trust across networks. One of the most exciting applications here is the conception of tools that can be used to create viable currencies that represent different visions. Today’s institutions and legacy wealth have decided that certain industries — financial services, specific technologies, etc. deserve to be better funded than others, and that anyone looking to bootstrap a business ecosystem must make the arduous trek to a few hubs of concentrated capital (e.g. Wall Street, Silicon Valley). It is hard to raise money outside these designated sectors and regions. Crypto, in its maturity, will allow anyone in the world to create currencies in their visions within local communities — a currency that rewards teachers in an unbanked province, a currency that rewards homemakers in a local village, or a currency that rewards poets and artists in a large financial center.

Too many people today work mostly for money — we all know someone who is unhappy with their job or perhaps even loathes their company’s vision, but they persist in the role because the money’s good. In a world where these tools exist, money can flow into the things people are called to do. People will be able to gather around networks of less “traditional” value, but valuable nonetheless — and if what you do generates value for others, it will generate value for you. And if it’s a job the world can’t currently offer, it’s a job you can make. Imagine a world where there are more poets, more artists, and happier people who find joy in their work. Perhaps one day, people won’t have to face the existential dilemma of choosing what is right for them, and what is profitable; what is right for them, and what is practical. A world where value creation can come from anywhere in society is a world where the thing you’re passionate about is also practical, and it is practical to be human.
