There’s always been a bit of confusion regarding what makes for the perfect image when advertising on Facebook. The image you choose will be the calling card and the call to action for Facebook users to click on the advert, so it’s always best to adhere to best practices and put your best foot forward.

Two types of ads

The very first thing you need to consider is: “what kind of advert will I be running?” Kit can build two different types of ads that have different image specifications.

The Carousel Advert

By default, if Kit can see multiple images in your products, it will build a carousel advert for you. Kit defaults to this format since there’s been a reported 10x better response to carousel ads than a single product advert. Because carousel ad images require space for navigation and the need to see some of the next slide in the carousel, there’s not as much screen-space to work with, so the image size is smaller than a single-product advert.

Carousel Advert Image specs

  • Image size: 1,080 x 1,080 pixels
  • Image ratio: 1:1 (square)

The Single Product advert

If you’re sending Kit a single product or a single photo to promote, Kit will default to running a single product advert. These ads tend to do best with bright lifestyle images to really make them stand out in the Newsfeed.

A single product advert with bold product photography will stand out in the Newsfeed

  • Image size: 1,200 x 628 pixels
  • Image ratio: 1.91:1

A bit about the quality of the image

While not everyone can afford a professional photographer to shoot their stock for online advertising, it’s actually pretty simple to get some quality images for your own use with a bit of preparation and a bit of understanding of what the best practices are. Shopify has a great little tutorial here that will give you some pointers in that direction, and if video is more your style, you can watch a presentation from Verne Ho, Director of UX at Shopify San Francisco, on product photography and taking great product shots with things you have at home.

A few things to keep in mind with product photos:

  1. Keep it simple. The choice of background of your product, if you’re not doing an extreme close up, needs to be plain and allow your product to stand out.
  2. Don’t mix up the shooting style from product to product. Try and keep the look of all of your product the same. If you’re shooting on a white background for one product, try and continue that practice for all of your products.
  3. Lighting makes the photo. If you can’t afford to rent lights for your photoshoot, try and use bright, natural and indirect lighting to shoot your products. The less light there is in the frame, the harder it will be for the camera, and your shop visitors, to see what’s happening in the picture.

Having the right photo size and dimensions can mean the difference between an advert that gets ignored and one that gets noticed. Now that you know the best dimensions to use for both carousel and single image adverts, you can make sure your ads stand out and convert the way you want!
