Mother Earth
Written Spring 2022
Laying on my bed on a windy Saturday afternoon. It’s springtime. My newborn son is asleep on my chest — no place we’d rather be. There’s nothing to do but soak him in. This new life. So I listen to his breath, gaze out the window. My house is on a hill at the top of the trees. I watch them sway in the breeze. Behind them, a vast sky. It has clouds today, and they’re moving double time compared to the trees.
Ahhh, NATURE.
When’s the last time
You went home to nature?
Stole minutes to gaze at clouds in the sky,
Paid attention to the trees in the breeze —
Breathed.
This is what we’re fucking with, you know?
The outside world.
That which makes us feel most alive,
That which we depend on to be alive.
It’s the ultimate power.
The one true force.
And speaking of power,
She’s the ultimate source.
We can burn her oils,
As we have.
Though we now know that’s how we lose what we have.
“It’s okay,” Mother gently sings.
Reassuring us of everything.
“Use my Sun, my Sons.
Use my Water, my Daughters.
This Whispering Wind — I made it for You.
Come home, Child
Rest your chest, Child.
I’d love for you to stay a while.
There’s a way, Child.
A bright new day,” she softly smiles,
“Can’t you see, it’s all worthwhile?”
“River gonna take me
Sing me sweet and sleepy

All the way back back home
It’s a far gone lullaby
Sung many years ago
Mama, mama, many worlds I’ve come
Since I first left home

By the waterside I will rest my bones
