What I’ve Learned About The World (So Far) And How It’s Shaped Who I Am
When I was a kid, I was certain that my life would go in a set, clear path. I was sure that my life was going to look a certain way, feel a certain way. I was going to be a rockstar and a billionaire, before I was 30.
When I was a kid, I had no idea about how the world worked, and what made it tick. Looking back now, I don’t see myself as being naive, I don’t see myself as being a clueless dreamer. I see a kid who had a lot to learn, and didn’t yet realize that the only way to learn it was by jumping into the wilderness and letting life happen, time and time again, with an open mind and a willingness to get the shit kicked out of him.
I’ve been on a journey, ever since then, ever since I was 18. Ever since I walked off a job on the grill at McDonald’s and started my first company, a venture that would one day end in total failure. I’ve been on a journey to uncover what makes me who I am, and what makes failure so integral to my own personality and growth.
A part of that journey has been writing, constantly, every single day. Writing has helped me to translate the lessons I’ve learned about myself, about success, about entrepreneurship and about people and how they fail and get back up again.
A part of that journey has been learning to help the people who read my work — the people who are struggling with their own problems and their own challenges. The people who are desperate for change or for a win or for a lucky break.
Those people often ask me if they can read my work in a book, something to return to time and time again. Well, that’s what this is.
This is what I’ve learned so far.

Foreword from MJ Fitzpatrick — Founder, Thymos

I think the thing that sticks out the most for me in Jon’s work is his honesty. He is who he is and uses that authenticity to tear down outdated models of the world and entrepreneurship and instead help his audience build both realistic and beautiful understandings of business and the world from the heart.
His writing style is something created out of a lovechild of a 40-year old drunk punk rocker and a young computer nerd. He will punch you in the face with his view of the world, not hesitate in calling your view of the world stupid if he thinks you need it: but he will always follow it up with simple, actionable advice that is easy to implement and will create change very quickly.
I’ve gotten to know Jon over the past year and I can tell you that the man walks his walk. In conversations we’ve had together, there has been many places in which he could have taken the easy route, or dipped into his ego. Instead he just lived his truth and has been extremely generous both with his time and advice — something I am extremely thankful for.
As someone who spends their days both giving people advice and telling them to stop listening to the poor advice others are giving them, it’s very rare that I find someone who I flat out just agree with and wish more people listened too. I can count them on one hand, and Jon sits foremost amongst them.
This book is about working hard for the life that you want to live, not what anyone from your parents to boss are trying to decide for you. It’s full of wisdom and insights that I cannot recommend highly enough and if you do what he says you will live a life of more success, but infinitely more important — more joy.
