Not fade away

Herein: one of many islands off the coast of Boston. This isn’t a “post no bills,” “do not advertise” sort of thing, people just don’t go to it enough to warrant any oversight from the authorities. And it’s host to one of the strangest little communities in the Boston Harbor.

Boston isn’t friendly to the urban explorer. The government is painstakingly efficient about its demolition: condemned sites go down, asbestos brings them down quicker, a bad reputation and word of mouth bring the wrecking balls down in mere months, leaving very little time for explorers to group, document and futz around in derelict buildings.

But not here.

Somehow we’ve turned a blind eye to this place. It’s advertised on a single board on George’s Island, one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Boston Harbor Islands collective and a ferry runs a handful of passengers at a time to the island.

The maritime storms come in fits and starts during the off-season when no one’s there, and it’s not uncommon to find the island’s occupants inspecting the wreckage the next spring. That’s sprinkled a bunch of prefab homes on the island, most of which are unlocked, in wait, and no one bats an eye if you jump into a few windows.

It’s a dead gallery.
