San Diego is not only one of the most beautiful places in Southern California, but it’s also the place I’m lucky enough to call home. The city features some of the most entertaining tourist’s hot spots in the country like Sea World, Balboa Park, Legoland and the world-famous San Diego Zoo to name a few.

Although all of our popular attractions are wonderful and enjoyable, there’s so much more this city has to offer. My mission with this blog is to spotlight some fantastic hidden gems, which people might otherwise miss on a typical trip to San Diego.

Whether your already familiar with the towns top tourist spots, visiting for the first time or simply looking for the local experience. The places to be featured are guaranteed to feed the appetite for discovery.

At 823 feet high, the picturesque site at Mount Soledad’s National Veterans Memorial is the perfect location to start our tour. Nestled in the hills of La Jolla, this mountaintop landmark gives visitors a 360-degree bird’s eye view of San Diego County.

I’m particularly fond of this site because it surprises visitors each step of the way. As people slowly drive up the mountainside, they get a glimpse of something attempting to reveal itself. It’s a cross, found at the very top of the monument. The structure almost seems like a distant mirage, but it doesn’t disappear when you approach. It becomes more prominent, and when it’s finally fully visible, and the suns rays hit it just right, the gleaming white cross glistens in all its glory.

When visitors reach the top of the site, that’s when San Diego truly reveals itself. With breathtaking views in all directions, its nearly overstimulating for the eye. The views are so stunning that many of my friends were speechless when they gazed upon the scenery.

The reaction people get when they see this place for the first time is priceless. And I still get that feeling of amazement everytime I revisit. That’s why it’s featured first on my list of places hidden in plain sight. Plus it’s the perfect place to look at the city and wonder where this tour will take you next.
