Spooky season: a horror movie for every mood
Sweater weather is here, leaves are falling, and pumpkin spice lattes are already a-brew. You know what that means — autumn, aka the best season of the year, has finally arrived. And folks, it’s time to get spooky. To get you in the Halloween spirit & give you a little inspiration for the perfect costume, here’s a rundown on the best spooky movies to watch no matter how fall has you feeling.
When you just wanna cuddle…
Watch It Follows (2014). Scary enough to need a friend or significant other to watch with, but not scary enough to to give you nightmares. It Follows is a movie full of teen love, friendship, and a nasty little curse you can only get… and get rid of… by sleeping with someone.
This movie might make you suspicious of anyone behind you for few days post-watch, but that’s exactly why it’s best to watch with someone who makes you feel your safest.
So grab a blanket, cuddle up, and get watching!
When you need a good scare…
Watch Hereditary (2018). Holy smokes, talk about scary. If you’re not down with sinister spirits, moderate violence, and familial tragedy, this deeply disturbing story is not for you
I watched this at the movies with a friend, and he literally jumped out of his chair and high-pitch screamed during one of the more unsettling scenes. (Sorry to out you there, Jake!)
This movie will probably give you nightmares, will definitely make you squirm, and might even give you the urge to watch the movie through the tiny slits in your fingers as they cover your eyes, but it’s one of the best horror films out there. So if you’re up for it, give it a go!
When you’re feeling kinda witchy…
Watch Hocus Pocus (1993). An oldie, but a goodie, this is probably the most obvious choice in this list. Hocus Pocus tells the tale of too-cool-for-school California kid Max and his sister Dani, who move to Salem and accidentally raise a coven of witches from the dead.
The Sanderson Sisters may have been dead for 300 hundred years, but they come back sassy as ever and thirsty for the souls of children to keep them young and beautiful forever.
Keep in mind, it’s a Disney film, so it’s light on the scares, but it will definitely put it’s spell on you. ;)
When you’re a little hungry…
Watch Zombieland (2009). Set in post-apocalyptic United States, this story follows 4 strangers on their journey to a rumored Zombie-free zone in Los Angeles and follows one character’s epic quest to find his favorite Hostess treat…the Twinkie.
This horror-comedy will have you laughing and cheering with each Zombie “Kill of the Week,” and even gives you some quality survival tips in case the fabled zombie apocalypse ever happens.
Starring Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jessie Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and a secret cameo by someone amazing, this movie is a can’t-miss.
When you’re ready to fall in love…
Watch Get Out (2017). A spin on the “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” trope, Get Out tells the story of Chris going to meet his girlfriend’s family for the very first time. And spoiler alert — it does not go well.
While it’s not the spookiest film you’ll watch, Jordan Peele masterfully weaves fictional scares with the real-life horrors of racism in America. If you’re looking for a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat, make you think, and even make you laugh, this is the movie for you.
And as if you needed extra proof that this film is amazing, Get Out won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay AND Daniel Kaluuya won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Chris.
When you need a laugh…
Watch The Cabin in the Woods (2012). A group of college students plans a weekend getaway at a cabin in the woods, and you guessed it, sh*t gets crazy. Sounds like your typical, campy horror film, right? Well that’s because this horror movie was made to poke fun at all other horror movies. And it’s awesome.
Combining all your favorite classic horror tropes, this horror-comedy will have you yelling “No, don’t do that!” at your TV, but we all know they’re gonna do it anyway.
Also Chris Hemsworth is shirtless in this movie, sooooo ya. :)
