When I was nine, we moved to Germany. Mom had remarried and Papa is German. He got a job in Germany so we went with him. Nine months later mom had a baby, Stefan. Fifteen months later she had another baby, Alexander, whom we call Shandi.

I was alone a lot. I started German Public School. Fourth grade. I spoke no German. I knew one sentence…
