Despite the rain, Portsmouth residents turned up in their masses to support a fire station’s charity open day.

In between going out on call, the firefighter staff delivered a detailed demonstration of exactly how they dismantle a car in order to rescue people on the road, and did so in the pouring rain, in front of a crowd.

Children were spoilt for choice with activities to do, including fairground games, dunking the fire crew into a pool, and meeting the ‘Fire Marshal’ mascot.

Jane Evans, who attended the event, said: ‘It was great to give my children an insight into what the firefighters do.

‘Everyone is so friendly.’

Over £600 was raised throughout the day and donated towards ‘The Fire Fighters Charity’ which assists serving, as well as, retired firefighters and their families in times of need.

A number of public services students from Highbury College also attended the event, led by college lecturer and station volunteer, Karen Wood. The students helped to run the event and raise money for charity, while working towards completing their course.
