Worthing Museum’s WW1 exhibition will run until next spring

Worthing Museum’s “WW1 Centenary: 100 Years” exhibition has been launched.

The exhibition will be based throughout the museum, showing how soldiers and civilians from Worthing were affected by the Great War.

Archaeologist James Sainsbury said: “We’ll tell the stories of the Home Front, the Royal Sussex Regiment’s experiences on the front line, and the training of soldiers at Shoreham Army Camp.

“We have a few individual stories too. There’s a gentleman called Frank Worley, who became quite good friends with the war poet Edmund Blunden despite their class differences.

“There will also be a video playing from the Royal British Legion, where people from Worthing talk about the sacrifice their ancestors made.”

The launch day of the exhibition will also see creative and cultural activities throughout the museum.

“We’ll have a big family workshop in the education room where children can make poppies and build biplanes out of lolly sticks.

“Local artist Rosemary Jones will be in the main art gallery demonstrating her lino-cut technique by drawing poppies.

“Then at 1pm the South Downs Folk Singers will be performing a selection of songs from the period.”

The exhibition will run until Spring 2019 and will be free to enter.
