The HMS Queen Elizabeth is the UK’s largest aircraft carrier

Hundreds of people gathered at Gunwharf Quays today to watch the return of the HMS Queen Elizabeth.

The UK’s largest aircraft carrier had been in the USA for nine weeks during a series of flight trials.

The ship and crew were met with cheering crowds with British flags as it approached the port.

Hundreds of people lined the seafront to watch the ship

Many relatives of the ship’s crew, naval enthusiasts, photographers and Portsmouth residents eagerly awaited the arrival of the ship.

Graham Wheatley, from Southsea, said: “When people see machinery of that size, they can’t help but be impressed.

“With all the uncertainty in the country at the moment, it shows that the country still maintains its pride.”

Mick Peach, from Southsea, had never seen the vessel before but said that the return of the aircraft carrier “brings a great sense of pride” to the city of Portsmouth.
