HMS Queen Elizabeth homecoming was ‘a beautiful sight’

HUNDREDS of people welcomed HMS Queen Elizabeth back into Portsmouth Harbour today.

The United Kingdom’s largest aircraft carrier set sail to America four months ago to complete a series of fighter jet, flight trials.

Upon its re-entrance into the city, the crew were met with cheering crowds full of family and friends, as well as residents keen to get a glimpse of the incredible ship.

Rich Nore, from Portsmouth and his son Harry were among the crowd.

Mr Nore said: “My wife and the mother to my son are aboard, we cannot wait to see her.”

Others waited in Gunwharf Quays simply to see the beauty of the HMS Queen Elizabeth.

Portsmouth resident Rory Slater said: “I’ve been here every time one of the navy ships have set sail or returned to the harbour.

“It’s a beautiful sight. I have deep connections to the Royal Navy and my father helped work on this ship — it’s great to see it up and running’.

The warship has docked in Portsmouth Harbour and is expected to enter active duty by 2021.
