Mason Mount, the 19-year-old Chelsea loanee, has been earning all the plaudits as the talisman in Frank Lampard’s Derby side so far this season.

The Portsmouth-born midfielder received his first England call up, for the UEFA Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain, after an impressive start to life in the Championship.

Mount has played 15 games so far this season, in the Championship and Carabao Cup, contributing five goals and one assist. He was also named man of the match after a spectacular display against Brentford, a game which Derby won 3–1.

Derby boss, Lampard, labelled Mount as a ‘special player’ and said he is ‘a hungry lad who wants to get to the top’.

Mount also played a pivotal part in England’s Under-19 European Championship victory in 2017, where the then 17-year-old scored the young lions’ opening goal in the first minute of the first game against Bulgaria. The midfielder ended the tournament with the highest number of assists, achieving four in five appearances.

Jake Entwistle, writer for Scouted Football and Squawka, said: “Mason thrived on being the focal point during the U19 Euros.

“He sat behind the striker as a traditional number 10, and excelled when he was given creative freedom throughout the tournament.”

During the 2017/18 season, Mount played in the Netherlands for Vitesse Arnhem, the loan feeder club for Chelsea, and thoroughly impressed. The teenage star scored 13 goals and set up another 10 throughout the season, earning himself the title of Vitesse’s player of the year.

One of Mount’s most valuable assets is his fantastic technique which contributes to his lethal ability from set pieces.

Entwistle said: “Mount has phenomenal ball striking technique.

“Whenever he steps up to take a free kick or corner, you expect a goal to come from it.”

The midfield maestro has already scored directly from a free kick already this season, which is made even more impressive as he has to compete with Tom Lawrence and Harry Wilson for the opportunity to take set pieces.

England fans look forward to this exciting player’s debut for the senior team, his set piece proficiency could prove important to the future of the Three Lions.
