Do you love the beautiful game, but feel that it is to fast-paced for you? Winchester University has set up a new walking football club, so you can enjoy the thrills and spills of the game, at a more leisurely pace.

Walking football will take place from 10:30am to 11:30am every Thursday. This includes plenty of time to enjoy the free tea, coffee and biscuits between and after matches.

The club is open to local residents, of all abilities, over the age of 50, who would like to play, just turn up to Sparkford Road campus with trainers, and you will be shown where to go by student helpers, who also offer advice, encouragement and support, during matches.

Alastair Loadman, Senior Lecturer at the University and a member of Eastleigh Walking Football Club, said: “The government wants us all to be physically active, but there are very few places which offer free physical activity. These sessions do just that. Walking football is a slower paced version of the beautiful game, ideal for the older player.

“This is a great opportunity for local people to come and use the University’s facilities, have some fun and get physically active for about an hour every week.

“There will be plenty of time to have a drink between matches and chat to other players, staff and students who are there to help and support. It is intended to be fun and informal, we are not training the England squad! Everybody is welcome.

“All equipment is provided; players just need to wear trainers on the astro. Studies have shown that walking football brings lots of benefits to participants, and we hope many of our near neighbours will join in.”
