Portsmouth’s Queen Alexandra hospital is to replace its A&E department and expand its mental health services — thanks to a £58m investment.

Mark Cubbon, chief executive of Portsmouth NHS Trust, said: ‘We’ve been thrilled today receiving notification of the £58 million investment in the QA site.

‘It allows us to open so many doors in terms of standards of care for our patients.’

The investment comes as part of £1 billion given to parts of the NHS today from the Government.

A Care Quality Commission inspection earlier this year found that the hospital required improvement in key areas — including its responsiveness and safety.

Sue Rowe, 55, visiting a family member at the hospital, said: ‘Mental health is an area we really need to work on, so its great to see the investment.’
