A CHURCH held its third annual outdoor nativity service despite the terrible weather.

Portsmouth Methodist Church held an event called ‘Walk the Nativity’ for residents of Copnor.

Children - dressed as nativity characters - walked alongside their parents, residents and two donkeys called Rusty and Oliver from Hayling Island Donkey Sanctuary.

The story was told while walking with frequent pauses to sing carols.

The route began at St Nicholas Church, Battenburg Avenue, passed through the College Park and ended at Copnor Methodist Church.

The final part of the nativity was performed at the church while the audience enjoyed mince pies, followed by a final carol and prayer.

The event was organised by the Portsmouth Methodist Church, leaders of the Boys and Girls Brigades, and supported by local Councillors Neill Young, Robert New and Ben Swann.

Organiser Catherine Burt said: “We had a great turnout despite the rather damp conditions.

“It was lovely to have so many people join us for our community event and to celebrate Christmas together.”

Everyone who attended received a goodybag with handmade decorations with “Copnor Walking Nativity” written on to commemorate the walk.

Cllr Neill Young said: “This is the third year we have run the event and it has grown quite organically. It’s always really magical.

“It’s great to get the kids involved in telling the Christmas story in a different way.”
