Rowans Hospice will be hosting its Light up a Light event in Canoe Lake, Southsea for the sixth year in a row.

The event is a chance for anyone who has experienced a loss, whether or not they have been cared for by Rowans Hospice, to celebrate their loved ones, and cherish the many happy memories of their lives.

Lights will be floated on Canoe Lake in Southsea representing all those who are being remembered. There will also be a short service by the Rowan’s Spiritual Care Chaplain Carol Gully.

Light up a Life is a national campaign in which a number of hospices across the UK are involved.

Verity James, project manager at the hospice, said: “Every year the reception to the event is amazing.

“Thousands of people turn up. As it is held at Christmas, it is particularly emotional because this is when you think of your loved ones most.”

Planning for the event starts three months before and is sponsored by the union Unite. The event yearly raises a lot of money and is a big contributor to the hospice fundraising.

You can register to make dedications and donations through the website and a token will be posted to you in exchange for an LED candle on the night.

“Although donations are voluntary, people often donate the same amount they would spend on a Christmas present for the person they’ve lost,” said Verity.

The Light up a Life service takes place on December 14, from 5pm.

There will be a small time for reflection and a blessing, followed by carols and music from local choirs and bands.

The event is suitable for all ages.
