Hayling Island’s Tournerbury Woods are set to continue hosting wedding venues following a recent planning application.

The planning application is to allow it to become a full time operation and host weddings on a more permanent basis, which will allow their use of marquees, facilities and the existing cottage for visitor accommodation.

The Tournerbury Woods Estate in Hayling Island.

The family which owns the site have been hosting weddings for 28 years and are not planning on slowing down.

Christopher Snell, owner of The Tournerbury Woods Estate, said: ‘Because of the exponential growth over the last few years it meant that the right thing to do was to apply for retrospective planning permission to regularise what we do.’

The area is also preserved and they build around the wildlife in Tournerbury.

He added: ‘Our plans for the future are to conserve and preserve this amazing place as part of the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.’

Weddings have been hosted here since 1990.

The application, which was submitted to Havant Borough Council’s website, has received many comments in support for the application.

One said: ‘This application will enhance and maintain the woodland setting and can only enhance the long term viability of this extraordinary place.’

Another gave many reasons and said: ‘The proposed use for the site brings much needed income, jobs and visitors to the Island and the activities on site are undertaken very sympathetically to the surroundings and with conservation of the environment and woodland at the core.’

There are a few constraints to the application, including flood zones and tree preservations.

Havant Borough Council is yet to decide on the application.
