When I first made the decision to move to the Dallas-Fort Worth area back in 2021, I was fleeing my horrible marriage and wanting a fresh start somewhere where (practically) nobody knew me. Having now been a resident of the Lone Star State for four months, I am certainly no expert on my new hometown, but I’ve now been here long enough that I‘ve observed some things I wasn’t quite expecting about the Dallas Metroplex. Or, at least, if I was expecting them, they haven’t quite turned out how I envisioned in my little pea brain.

The Weather

Texans have a favorite saying about their weather, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.” I’ve heard that said about Cuba, too, although Cuba doesn’t get tornadoes all that often, and Texas sure does. Since I moved here, we’ve had at least four tornado watches in my area. We’re under one today, at the start of “tornado season,” which runs through June in these parts. Here, the hail is routinely larger than a ping-pong ball, and that’s a fun sound when it’s slamming into your roof. They don’t call the winds Mariah around here, they call them Twisters.

Now, being a California girl for the better part of my 53 years on this earth, I definitely prefer something I can see coming to…
