BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Handmade products by Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) from different jail dormitories in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) were displayed for sale in a pop-up shop at the SM Baguio Mall Atrium on Tuesday, May 28.

As part of the anti-drug campaign, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP-CAR) partnered with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in launching the first regional “Buhay Ingatan Droga’y Ayawan” (BIDA) challenge wherein PDLs showcased their talents in painting, handicraft-making, and songwriting.

“Ine-encourage natin sila na while they are incarcerated inside our jails ay magiging proactive sila sa bagay na free silang gumawa na mailalabas din nila yung talents and skills nila,” Vilma Fangsilat, Jail Senior Inspector of BJMP-CAR, said in an interview on May 28.

Fangsilat also said that the BIDA Challenge aims to battle illegal drugs and promote awareness in communities.

The handicrafts showcased various products such as tambo-crafts, fruit trays, bayong bags, pillows, foot rugs, and other home design accessories.

Meanwhile, the Baguio City Jail Male Dormitory won first place in the painting competition of the BIDA challenge. The Mountain Province District Jail bagged both first place in the handicraft-making and songwriting contest.
