Let’s be honest. This was a bruising election season in America. Now everyone seems to be asking — what’s next?

It’s time to take things #beyondtheballot and learn how we can be engaged and active citizens all the time. We need our next generation of citizens to know how to listen to people whose opinions are different than their own, to strike a compromise, and to speak truth to power.

And what better place to start doing that than in Austin?

I’m proud to say that Generation Citizen, a national nonprofit organization, officially launched a Central Texas site in Austin the day after the election. Using an innovative, action-based curriculum, Generation Citizen teaches middle and high school students how to engage with and participate in local government. Students get to pick an issue they care about, and over the course of a semester, learn how to make a difference in their local community.

This is where real change begins — right here in our own backyard. It’s time for us to move #beyondtheballot and teach Austin’s kids how to be engaged, active, and passionate citizens of our city and our country.

But it won’t happen without your help. This #GivingTuesday we are raising $5,000 to fund Austin’s first-ever Civics Day. It’s kind of like a science fair… but for civics! With Civics Day, students will have the opportunity to share what they’ve been working on through the Generation Citizen curriculum with our city’s leaders, giving them the unprecedented ability to make their voices heard.

Please consider giving $50 to help us reach our goal. (Or give $25 and ask a friend to do the same). Donate here!

This election was brutal. But now is the time for us to move #beyondtheballot and start building a better democracy, right here in Austin. Together, we really can make a difference.

Thank you,
The Generation Citizen Central Texas Staff and Board Members
