I listen to a lot of books through my library app on my phone. Many authors who write mysteries and thrillers seem to include crazy, unexpected twists to shock their readers. Though I don’t need plot twists to enjoy a story, here are three novels with clever twists that not only surprised me but made the stories more memorable.

Just Another Missing Person by Gillian McAllister

To tell this story, McAllister switches between multiple perspectives: Julia, a detective leading an investigation on a missing persons case; Lewis, the father of a missing woman; Emma, the mother of a suspect; and Olivia, a woman who has been reported missing — though her story gets told indirectly, through social media posts.

What I love about this book is that McAllister manages to create a plot within a plot. The original mystery — the disappearance of a young woman named Olivia — isn’t the main storyline at all. Olivia’s case merely acts as the catalyst to uncover the real mystery while exposing Julia’s biggest secret.
