Going outdoors is a healthy and fashionable way of living. It’s not only popular among adults but also among children. It is a way for them to learn about nature, to be on their own and to cultivate positive temperament. During the outdoor exploration process, a walking stick may make the journey much easier and safer. Thus how to choose childrens walking sticks is essential. There are many aspects to take into consideration.

First of all, figure out the material and suitable length. Most widely used materials are aluminum and carbon fiber. In term of weight, carbon fiber is lighter than aluminum one. Carbon fiber one is generally stiff and strong, but it easily gets out of control when there is any damage. As for aluminum one, it’s able to carry on even with slight damage. Thus the material to be chosen has something to do with the distance to be covered and the terrain condition. For light-weighted backpacking, like for children, a carbon fiber is enough. But under any tough cases (not suggested for green hand children for hiking), an aluminum one is better in case of any risks for a damage. At lease it won’t out of work all-at-once. As for the length, most trekking poles can be adjusted to meet different needs. For children less than 1.55cm high, it’s suggested to have a length around 100cm. For children with a height between 1.55 to 1.7cm or so, a 110cm trekking pole will do.

Then think about its locking mechanism. Almost all hiking poles have locking systems to prevent them from slipping when in use. There are typically three types of systems: external level lock, push-button lock, twist lock. The first one is easy in operation with a clamp similar mechanism. The second type applies a button for releasing and collapsing the sticks. The third twist type is very durable and strong in use with its unique screw setup. There are other poles using different combination of the above to maintain good balance. The essence for choosing this feature is based on your own preference since each one has its merits.

Then for a children walking stick, comfort shall be a consideration. It means the grip shall take into account. The grip shall be soft and flexible enough for holding. Cork foam and rubber are three most commonly used material for grip. Cork one is superior in resisting moisture. Good option for sweaty hands. Foam type is the softest to be held. The rubber one is good in cold insulation and vibration absorption, great option for cold weather.

For children hiking, suitable childrens walking sticks help get the first step out and further help build self-confidence and great temperament.
