City Awake: F.U.N. Recap
This September, we were lucky to attend City Awake’s second annual Fierce Urgency of Now: Energizing Millennials of Color to Unlock Boston’s Promise (#FUNinBOS). City Awake works to improve the experience for Boston young professionals of color by creating a community where everyone feels welcome with the opportunity to thrive. The weeklong event: FUNinBOS was a testimony to that mission. Events ranged from inspiring emotional intelligence within an organization to enjoy a rooftop dinner with fellow working professionals in Boston.
Here are a few of our favorite events:
Transforming Transportation:
Focused on rethinking public transportation in Boston, BostonBRT insisted on bringing in new innovative functions to our transportation system in Boston. The presentation introduced Bus rapid transit or BRT and explained its importance of revolutionizing the way we travel through Boston. Everett, MA has even promised to implement this transportation system in the next few years.
Psychological Safety and Culture Workshop:
This interactive workshop hosted by ConsciouslyExposed inspired participants to seek different ways to increase one’s cultural intelligence at work across multicultural business settings for personal and professional growth. Rather than merely performing a presentation, the workshop included spoken word to invoke feeling and community conversations. We were able to experience the importance of working together to establish better emotional intelligence for our organizations to work more efficiently and ethically.
Millennials Rising:
Hosted by TSNE MissionWorks, a panel of millennial leaders of color shared their experiences working within various NonProfit organizations and how they rose to higher positions. The significance of learning from those who come from similar backgrounds is invaluable, and while many stemmed from different fields and missions, the panelists shared a few essential tips to success. Here at Hildreth Institute, we are always thinking over different solutions to the current student debt crisis. Because student debt influences the way that people throughout their lives operate, we have a unique opportunity to consider how our mission intersects with that of others. Whether they aim to rethink housing costs and accessible, reliable transportation, or promote life-long healthy habits within the workplace and without.
We hope to collaborate with our fellow organizations within Boston to create an inclusive, informative experience like the ones we attended at City Awake’s Fierce Urgency of Now.
