This November, in the spirit of thankfulness Hildreth Institute, decided to host a twitter chat alongside StudentDebtCrisis.org and The Institute of Student Loan Advisors (TISLA). We believe that students should be able to look back at higher education and feel grateful for the way knowledge has allowed them to mobilize, not to look back and sneer, “thanks for the debt.”

Part of the reason for our crisis involving student debt is that grants have not kept up with rising college prices. Forcing us to rely heavily on student loans; another part is the complexity of higher ed financing, which obscures the amount of debt we are accumulating, which we only become fully aware of after we have graduated and begun repaying those loans.

#ThanksForTheDebt acted as an open forum for students, knowledgeable organizations, advocates, and higher education institutions. The hour-long chat encouraged people to speak out about what they wish they knew, what they have to share, and to find what they may not know they needed.

Check out what participants had to say.
