Felix’s story is too familiar — and too scary to ignore.

At the debate on Sunday, I mentioned a brave little boy named Felix, whose mom wrote to me this summer.

Her letter moved me so deeply that I wanted to take a moment to tell you his story.

Felix was born in rural southern Ethiopia, and he was adopted and brought to the U.S. in 2006. He’s been a citizen for nearly a decade now—almost his entire life—but this year, he’s become terrified that he’ll be kicked out of the country, separated from his parents, and sent the roughly 7,500 miles back to Ethiopia if my opponent gets elected president.

His mother wrote that her son was “genuinely frightened.” That he wakes up every morning and goes to sleep every night “burdened by fear,” feeling unsafe and insecure.

That is no way for a child to live.

I’m in this race for Felix. I’m in it for Anjulí, a teenager in Florida, who’s been bullied these past few months because she’s Latina. And I’m in it for all the other Americans out there who’ve felt fundamentally threatened by what they’ve heard on the news over the past 16 months.

I promise you today that as your president, I will fight your battles as if they’re my own. I will walk into the Oval Office every morning and pour my heart into making every little girl and boy out there feel safe and sound. But I need your help to get there, to ensure that we get the opportunity to make their lives better and brighter, and to guarantee that Donald Trump’s fear-mongering and hate-kindling stop short in four weeks.
