Even now, when we are getting ready to go out in the world, there are ways to meet people and spend quality time together. Even when everything opens up, it might be better to take things slow and only hang out with your closest people. So here are a few safe date ideas that you should try before everything goes back to normal.

Takeout but make it cute

When the pandemic only just began, home office, take out, and other things that you could suddenly do at home seemed kind of fun. But a year later, everyone just can’t wait to get out of the house. Since it’s getting warmer now, why not pick up your favorite takeout and enjoy it outside? Take a blanket, drive (or bike!) to your favorite park, and enjoy your meal with a side of fresh air. If you’re feeling artsy or celebrating a special occasion, put in a bit more effort and have one of those insta-friendly picnics with fresh fruit, cheese boards, and a bottle of something.

Airbnb experiences

Getting out of your hometown is always refreshing, even virtually. Although we wouldn’t recommend traveling outside your area just yet, we would suggest that you look into Airbnb experiences. On one hand, you get to see what people around the world are up to, and on the other hand, you realize that we’re all in this together. There are entire families and communities whose livelihood depends on tourism, and the Airbnb experience is a great way to support them. You can learn the Argentinian tango, get your natal chart reading or chat to a Michelin-starred chef from Singapore — possibilities are endless.

Movie night

Movie night is a classic for a reason. You forget about your troubles and the real world and just immerse yourself into fiction for a couple of hours. That’s something we all need this year. If you’re lucky to live with your significant other, you know what to do (hint: it involves food). If you’ve only just met recently, Teleparty is a great app that lets you watch movies and shows on the most popular streaming platforms together and chat at the same time. Try showing each other your favorite movies — that can be a great bonding experience.

Swap books

Fear not, dear bookworms, we haven’t forgotten about you. Just like movies, books have the power to take you to a different world, so reading is a perfect activity for a time when the real world is not at its best. If both you and your date love reading, order each other books that you think the other person would enjoy, unpack them on a video call, and see each other’s reactions. Or better yet — get the same book and read together. I mean, reading out loud to each other and discussing the book afterward? Adorable.

Game night

If you think you’re not into games, trust me, you just haven’t found your game yet. Luckily, we live in a time when most of our favorite board games are available online as well, so there’s nothing stopping you from having a cozy night in playing Scrabble — or Minecraft, whatever is your thing. Before the pandemic, when we were on our phones, we paid less attention to each other. Now the tables have turned, so we should use our online time to connect with each other.
