Many companies are choosing to put the well-being of their employees first by allowing them to work four days instead of five, giving their teams three days weekends.
Some companies are even going as far as reducing hours without reducing pay. The most interesting part is that many companies are getting the same amount of work done with the reduced hours due to increased efficiency when working.
It’s a classic example of Parkinson’s Law, when you work 40 hours a week, you find ways to fill those 40 hours. While this may seem like a radical idea, it’s not the first time society has changed the number of hours worked.
During the Industrial Revolution, factory workers commonly worked 80–100 hours per week. It wasn’t until 1926 when Henry Ford popularized the 40-hour workweek. Ford found that working more yielded only a small increase in productivity that lasted a short period of time, so he reduced hours for Fort Motor Company employees who began working five, eight-hour days without a decrease in pay.
