The contents of the “incriminating” photographs have never been revealed

Princess Margaret was as fun and free-spirited as her sister, the Queen, was sensible and responsible; image source.

MI5 is the United Kingdom’s Secret Service and deals with domestic intelligence. It’s not to be confused with MI6, of James Bond fame, which deals with foreign intelligence.

The service’s mission is to “protect British democracy and economic interests” by monitoring terrorism and espionage in the UK. As it turns out, one such threat came not from terrorists and spies but from the scandalous behavior of a member of the Royal family.

“Let Sherlock try to solve this”

Those were the words scrawled at the crime scene. It was Saturday night, September 11, 1971, and a gang of thieves had broken into the safety-deposit box vault at Lloyds Bank on Baker’s Street.

The robbers made off with an estimated £500,000 — £6,000,000 in today’s money. In a move reminiscent of the great heist movie Ocean’s Eleven, the robbers pulled off their ruse by renting a storefront two doors down from the bank. Under the guise of renovations, they dug a tunnel straight to the vault.
