Seven Amazing Sisters
The must be told story of the Woolsey women
My grandmother had nine children. Seven of which were girls, my dad and his brother book-ended the lot of them. Growing up only having an older sister and younger brother, I always wondered how it would be to grow up in a big family like my dad had. According to him, it was quite chaotic. Also according to him, even more crazy with as many girls they had in the family.
The theme of seven sisters seemed to follow me wherever I went. When my husband and I visited Blarney Castle in Ireland, I was awe-struck by the story of the Seven Sisters standing rocks that lay just beyond the famous castle: “Just northeast of the Castle can be found a circle of nine standing stones, two of which have fallen. It is said that in medieval times a chieftain who had two young sons and seven daughters took his sons on their first battle against a troublesome neighbour who was constantly raiding his cattle. The chieftain was victorious in the battle but at great cost: both his sons were killed. Returning to his cattle with his troops and the bodies of his sons, he stopped at this familiar spot and to mark the death of his sons the grieving chieftain ordered his men to knock over two of the stones.” (Blarney Castle Website)
More recently, I started reading a trilogy of historical fiction by Martha Hall…
