In 1939, Lina Marcela Medina of Peru became the youngest mother in the world when she gave birth to a healthy baby boy at the age of five. Precisely, she was only five years, six months and three weeks old when she had her baby. Her parents’ medical assessments further revealed that conception happened when the girl was not yet five years old.

Unlike other young girls who begin to exhibit signs of puberty between the ages of 9 and 10, Lina experienced puberty earlier than expected. Her sexual organs had also developed rapidly. This condition which she experienced, was later known as “precocious puberty”.

It was a shocking discovery

Lina’s parents, Tiburelo Medina and Victoria Losea, had just moved to a remote village in Peru when they noticed the protruding belly of their young daughter. They feared that it was a massive tumor, so they took her to see a famous doctor, Dr Gerardo Lozada. Some other sources have reported that due to the unusual growth, Lina’s mother was convinced that evil spirits had taken possession of her daughter’s body. The doctor also thought that it was a form of abdominal growth that the young girl had.
