George Stinney was sentenced to death and executed in an electric chair
In 1944, George Stinney Jr, a 14- year-old African American boy, was executed for the murder of two girls in South Carolina. The bodies of Mary Emma Thames and Betty June Binnicker, were found in a shallow ditch close to the railroad tracks. People living in the town of Alcolu where it happened, were appalled because they had been searching for the girls the day before their bodies were found. When the girls had failed to return home the previous day, search teams had been arranged to find them.
Both girls who had been collecting flowers, were severely beaten till their skulls cracked. They had suffered severe blunt force trauma as they were beaten to death with a railroad spike. The spike was placed close to their bodies.
