Mother’s Day is always on a Sunday, so rather than giving your mum the typical gifts, why not spend some quality time with her to honour her? In Hong Kong, we’ve found some interesting places for making DIY creations with your mother and take a step to bond with each other. Try giving the gift of an experience — be it painting, flower arranging, or crafting — so you’ll bring home beautiful memories and a handmade souvenir!

Paint Palette — Your Creative Canvas

Upstairs in her studio in Causeway Bay, Paint Palette’s owner Winnie helps bring out your artsy sides with blank canvases and colourful paints. At a paint jamming session, all you need is to show up with mum, since paints, easels, and even drinks are provided. So put on an apron, pick up a brush, and enjoy a carefree, creative afternoon.

Shop owner Winnie started painting by learning from her father, and opening a studio had been her dream for years. This airy space is the perfect way to spend a leisurely Mother’s Day, and instead of giving a bouquet of flowers, you can paint one that will last for years!

Try contacting the studio to make special arrangements and make your art jamming session an unforgettable experience. There is no minimum number of participants at paint jamming sessions, though you can also book out the studio as a private party with a group of friends or family members.

Whether you and mum are experienced painters or not, we’re sure you’d find a DIY painting session a fun one!

Chocolart — Get Crafty

On Queen’s Road East in Wan Chai, Chocolart is another upstairs art oasis. Stepping into this studio, you’re greeted with light streaming through the wall of windows and many adorable pieces made by past students and instructors. Here, you can participate in paint jamming sessions, make DIY decorations for your home, or floral arrangement classes.

In addition to painting on the traditional canvas surface, customers at Chocolart can paint on furniture, pillows, matroska dolls, and even toilet seats! The studio also provides classes on decoupage technique — gluing pieces of ornamental paper onto objects — to apply on home accessories like plates and clock faces. Basically, you can spruce up any surface imaginable… doesn’t it bring up your childhood recollections of graffitiing places and getting into trouble with mum?

If you prefer to create something more traditional for Mother’s Day, Chocolart also provides flower arrangement classes, but be sure to reserve your class ahead of time. The arrangements are done in gift boxes, so they’re ready to be taken home and displayed proudly. Perhaps your own piece may not look as professional those purchased from the florist, but you really can’t beat the sense of warmth and affection of gifting something homemade!

The most important thing about Mother’s Day is for us to take time from our busy lives and give our mothers the appreciation they deserve. We’re sure these DIY experiences would warm any mother’s heart. Now that we’re thinking about it, the last time we crafted with mum was probably when we were in primary school!
