Of all the major international galleries in Hong Kong right now, de Sarthe Gallery is getting the most buzz… but why?

Hong Kong may lag behind the art scene in Europe but we’re surely catching up. Art galleries have boomed over the recent years with the rise curators and art personalities in town, firmly establishing its place on the global art scene. It’s clear to say the art scene is stronger than before as we enter the mainstream art world.

However, with Hong Kong’s soaring rents and space limitations have forced numerous galleries with small spaces to find room further afield. Most galleries have relocated to the up-and-coming Wong Chuck Hang district, where art lovers will find hidden gems located inside the grimy industrial buildings.

Of all the major international galleries in Hong Kong right now, it’s probably De Sarthe Gallery that’s getting the most buzz. Founded in 1977 in Paris, Pascal de Sarthe, Founder of de Sarthe Gallery launched a 10,000-square-foot gallery space with four-metre-high ceilings and views of Hong Kong’s Southside in March 2017.

Spread across the entire 20th floor of the Global Trade Square building, the gallery opening featured the works of 5 emerging Chinese and Hong Kong artists: Liang Ban, Mak Ying Tung, Tong Kunniao, Wang Xin, and Xin Yunpeng. This modest, well-designed space boasts an impressive programme of talents, bringing a visual art, music, architecture, performance, film and installations on one floor.
