Game changer

What you see in this simple photograph is a game changer.

What you see is distributed computing at the true edge, outside the data closet, at scale.

What you see is a cluster (or hive) of 72 Hivecells.

It has a combined compute power of 432 CPU cores, 36 TB storage and 18,432 GPU cores.

There are 12 stacks of six Hivecells each. Each stack has a single power cable and Internet cable plugged into the Hivecell at the bottom of the stack. The Baranovsky connectors on the Hivecells pass power and ethernet up through the stack.

The whole hive, all 72 servers, is plugged into a standard 20 amp wall socket.

The whole hive is interconnected with a single 16 port network switch that costs about $100.

The whole hive sits safely on a shelf that costs about $40.

There is no uninterrupted power supply, because each Hivecell has a built-in one hour battery.

There is no special air conditioning because the whole hive is less than 1000 watts.

That is a game changer.

What could your organization do with this kind of compute power at the edge?
