This marks the fourth year The Hive has hosted an internship program, with this year’s cohort being comprised of 9 students from schools around the world, including; Carnegie Mellon University, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, University of Massachusetts Amherst, University of Toronto, and University of Bayreuth (Germany). Every year we hand-select a small cohort of graduate, undergraduate, and high school students that best embody the tenacity, curiosity, and passion that are hallmark traits of our own startup founders and employees.

Over the last few years cheap computing, novel algorithms and mountains of data have unleashed new AI-based solutions. The Hive is at the forefront of this trend and successfully built many companies that tackle enterprise use cases involving AI and data. The Hive is currently working on a number of use cases that apply machine learning to high-value business problems. The interns are working on such cases that our startups are currently facing or an opportunity we see in the market for, in an environment that encourages growth, disruption, and independence.

The areas explored span blockchain & cryptocurrency, A/B testing frameworks, machine learning and deep learning, biotechnology, ethical & social implications of AI, and urban air mobility (flying taxis). This summer’s projects include:

  • DeepDerm, a universal skin disease diagnosis system using deep convolutional neural network (CNN)
  • A reference pipeline to build, train, evaluate and deploy end-end Machine Learning and Deep Learning applications
  • Standardized, language agnostic A/B testing platform built on a Machine Learning platform
  • Reimagining commerce in a tokenized world of cryptocurrencies
  • Market research and analysis on eVOTLs (flying cars) and the future of transportation
  • Philosophy & AI, ethics, social impacts of artificial intelligence and future of work

We are not only building the future of technology, but also the future that is going to build that technology. We expose emerging tech talent to the startup ecosystem and cutting edge research problems, while giving them the tools/resources and infrastructure they need in order to build and scale their own careers. Through their success we aim to enable the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.

One of the most exciting yet terrifying times in life is that transition from youth into adulthood.

You’re trying to figure out who you are, how the world works, and where you fit into this big life puzzle. You try to wade through an ocean of advice, market data, and social pressure. That boat ride transitioning from youth to adulthood is a challenge, but one vehicle that can help cross this murky water is an internship.

Internships at The Hive allow students to gain leading-edge AI and data skills, network with startup employees & founders, and acquire experience in a particular domain. The internship also enables them to hone in on their career goals, narrowing of the path to who they want to become and gaining a refined sense of self. Not only do our interns work on projects, and do daily stand ups and weekly sprint demos, but they also have internal marketing and business activities (on-site and off-site skills and relationship building opportunities) as well as involvement in The Hive’s external facing events with The Hive Think Tank , our Content & Event Platform for thought leadership for “All things AI” (10K+ member community).

Our interns have described their experiences:

“It was like going to Club Med. In the beginning I didn’t know anyone but by the end I didn’t want to leave.”

“My friends in internships at large companies say they work on a small part of a bigger project the whole time… whereas here [our projects are] end-to-end and we see our personal projects come to life.”

“I loved learning to work with TensorFlow because it’s been a personal goal of mine to gain experience with it. In fact, I’ve convinced my friends to enroll in a Machine Learning course with me this fall.”

“This internship helped me pick between focusing on data science or software engineering… I realized I really enjoy creating and building and engineering allows me to do that.”

“My primary goals [for this internship] were to network in tech, to gain real world project experience, and to fully understand the tech stack- and I’ve hit all three.”
