HKUMed is constantly adopting the latest technologies to ensure graduates possess the necessary skills to thrive in dynamic healthcare settings.

Take a look at the ways we’re preparing the healthcare professionals of the future to better serve their communities.

Students learn how to use handheld ultrasound devices

A stethoscope for the 21st century

Introduced for Specialty Clerkship students in 2022, the combination of a handheld ultrasound with an intuitive app gives students an additional tool to examine patients.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery students (MBBS) learn how to use the portable devices in complement to traditional physical examinations to formulate diagnoses at the bedside.

Training in bedside ultrasound is key to familiarising aspiring physicians with the tools they will rely on for their future practice.

Students and teachers use an Anatomage Table to view a virtual cadaver

Virtual cadavers for anatomy and dissection

HKUMed has expanded anatomy teaching beyond the dissection laboratory to augment this vital area of learning with virtual cadavers and immersive tools.

Opened in 2022, HKUMed’s Techmezz houses two Anatomage Tables offering 3D anatomy and virtual dissection alongside 32 virtual reality stations.

Learners are free to revisit the dissections made in the lab or challenge themselves to perform procedures on virtual patients.

Embracing technology for remote consultations

Telemedicine and telehealth have become increasingly crucial areas of medicine since the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to this evolving technology and to provide our students with real patient scenarios during the pandemic, HKUMed introduced telemedicine to MBBS teaching in 2020.

The award-winning initiative has now expanded to cover tele-consultation for outpatients and the potential for remote monitoring of patients.

HKUMed’s online learning is closely tailored to the needs of students

Captivating online learning and assessment

E-learning at HKUMed goes beyond the basic recorded lecture. Instead, it is carefully tailored to the optimal learning patterns of today’s students.

Our E-Learning Studio and Multimedia Learning Team give teachers the pedagogical and technical support to produce high-quality and engaging teaching resources.

From animation to gamification, HKUMed’s teachers deploy the latest techniques to capture their students’ attention.

Additionally, HKUMed’s e-Assessment tools allow teachers to enrich exams with visual materials for greater clarity and a more realistic feel.

Turning AI chatbots into interactive study partners

Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool offering new opportunities for learning as well as academic research.

A series of AI modules developed by HKUMed will teach students how to use the technology in everything from developing study notes to harnessing generative AI in healthcare practice.

HKUMed teachers have also developed an AI chatbot for clerking patients, giving students the opportunity to hone their skills on virtual patients.

We will continue to embrace cutting-edge technology to ensure our graduates not only become competent healthcare professionals but also emerge as innovators in the field.
