HKUMed Names New Building in Honour of Long-standing Supporters

One of HKUMed’s latest buildings was officially named in December in honour of two longtime supporters of the Medical Faculty, Daniel and Mayce Yu.

University of Hong Kong President, Professor Xiang Zhang, presided over the official naming ceremony of the Daniel and Mayce Yu Administration Wing.

Professor Zhang thanked Mr and Mrs Yu for their steadfast support of HKU’s medical research and medical education.

“The Daniel and Mayce Yu Medical Development Fund [that was] set up recently is their clear vote of confidence to the ever greater impact that our Faculty and University will make in the future,” Professor Zhang said. “Thank you again Mr and Mrs Yu for believing in HKU’s vision and enabling us to advance into new frontiers.”

Mr Yu, a native of Shanghai studied in the United States before founding Maxwell Electronics in Hong Kong in 1966 to manufacture camera flash units for export.

Mr Yu and his wife Mayce are staunch supporters of HKU, with their donations supporting four endowed professorships — in the fields of virology, rheumatology, anaesthesiology and breast cancer research — in the Medical Faculty.

Professor CS Lau, Dean of Medicine, who is Daniel CK Yu Professor in Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, described how the impact of the 2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong inspired Mr Yu to support medical education.

“Mr Yu has always believed that electronic technology can change our lives, yet he also believes that what it takes to have better lives is good health. He also thinks that everyone should receive a good education,” Professor Lau said.

The three-storey building houses offices and the Faculty Boardroom, a lecture and event space with a view of Lamma Island.

HKUMed is in the process of an ambitious expansion plan to accommodate a larger number of students to meet a shortfall in healthcare professionals in Hong Kong.

In line with this goal, the new wing was built to accommodate administration staff, freeing up space in the William MW Mong Block for teaching and learning activities.

The Daniel and Mayce Yu Administration Wing was officially opened in July and sits on the former Tang Court, an area named in honour of the parents of the former Dean of Medicine and women’s health advocate, Professor Grace Tang.
