Tang Court Reopening Celebration
In mid-May, HKUMed marked the opening of a reimagined Tang Court, an area first named in 2002 to honour the parents of the former Dean of Medicine and pioneering women’s health advocate, Professor Grace Tang.
Forced to relocate to the Faculty Boardroom because of heavy rain, Professor Gabriel Leung, Dean of Medicine alongside guests including Priscilla Wong , Chairman of the HKU Council, Professor Sophia Chan, Secretary for Food and Health, and former Dean of Medicine Professor Rosie Young, celebrated the new commemorative plaque to be installed in the revamped Tang Court.
The original Tang Court boasted a garden with seating and a panoramic view and played host to a series of events for the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.
Tang Court’s garden area was repurposed in 2021 to meet the Faculty’s rapidly changing needs to train future healthcare professionals and nurture leading researchers.
The original site is now home to the Faculty Administration Wing, a three-storey block comprising offices and the Faculty Boardroom, an event and lecture space with a stunning view across to Lamma Island.
“It is actually the Tangs’ privilege to have a building like this to be built on this plot of land,” Professor Tang said at the ceremony. “I think we should use land more effectively and administrative staff are very important people in a university.”
She also thanked Professor Leung for the continued presence of a space dedicated to her parents, adding that “they gave me life, so I could do what I have done”.
A reimagined Tang Court has since been created in front of the Faculty Administration wing featuring potted flowering and structural plants, including roses. The new Tang Court acknowledges the generous support from Professor Tang and her husband Dr Luk Kwok-fai.
To celebrate the occasion, Professor Leung presented Professor Tang with a painting of the new Tang Court.
Professor Tang is an Honorary Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She graduated from HKUMed’s Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1971, later completing a Doctor of Medicine in 2006.
In the role of Dean of Medicine from 1998 to 2001, Professor Tang introduced a new medical curriculum to HKUMed. She later became the founding Chief Executive of the HKU-Shenzhen Hospital in 2011.
