Today we are trusted with more than £86 billion by 1,091,000 clients. We are based in Bristol where we now employ over 1,300 colleagues. In 2018 we opened up our first ever overseas office — HL Tech. Based in the Warsaw Spire, HL Tech now employs more than 70 people.
As HL grows its technology capabilities we want to bring you updates on the exciting developments we make and some best practice that we have learned along the way.
Who we are and what we do
At HL, we have a number of multidisciplinary teams working together to build the digital tools and services that our clients need to manage their savings and investments. The majority of digital traffic still comes in through our website but our mobile audience is growing — and growing quickly. Over 70% of all client logins to our digital platforms are now on our mobile apps. And in Q1 2019 over 25% of our clients used one of our apps for managing their investments.
Where are we going
Like all financial services companies, HL is constantly evolving to adapt to the ever changing needs of our clients. Our purpose is to empower people to save and invest with confidence, and for our clients and their experience of HL to be at the center of our strategy. The way we use technology sits at the heart of achieving both these aims. Whether it’s through offering more services digitally, bringing in innovative technologies that can make it easier for our clients to understand their finances, or building an open architecture that can keep up with the relentless pace of technology — there is much we are doing to build the HL of the future. And the way we think about delivering technology, through increasing our organisational agility, is also changing.
Joining the conversation
Balancing the pace of change, with the upgrade of legacy systems, the stability of platforms, and at the same time reducing cyber risk is always a challenge for our industry. HL is no different. We have recently opened up a site in Warsaw (called HL Tech) to support us in this journey. There have been some things we have done well and there have been some things we can improve upon. One of the most effective ways to learn and evolve is to communicate directly with others that do the same thing. As well as holding talks internally, speaking at meetups, and visiting conferences we believe that a mature technology delivery organisation should reach directly to others and share their best practice. And we are happy to share!
