What’s in a name — HMD Labs?
Heisenberg Matrix Development is our ‘Full Name’, but friends call us HMD Labs.
Werner Heisenberg is credited with the creation of quantum mechanics, the place in physics and understanding where things get… blurry. Specifically he notes that it’s difficult to pin down combinations of variables. A common simplification being “the more specifically you know where something is, the less you can know about how fast it’s going, or in what direction.” The inverse holds true.
This duality embodies our mission with our customers: we seek to measure positive delta in speed over precise positioning. We understand the flow before capturing the snapshot, because the digital world is one of change. We are visible from the tracks we leave in the medium as we shoot through at near light-speed.
Matrix… arrangements of things and the tracking of their relationships. Behind systems and micro-services and cloud data warehouses and containers and pipelines… shot through all of this is a matrix of data and knowledge, an invisible network of connections. Relationships, network effects, the demand for ever more complete views of the universe tailored to a specific moment’s demand… this is the order of the day.
All of our components and ideas, everything we build, it fits into a consistent matrix. Consistency creates speed. More speed and consistent matrices drives greater agility with higher control. A Heisenberg matrix of data then, allows visibility into the particle/wave duality of data and its refinement and utilization.
Development. We thought a lot about this one. What is it that we want to do, and to help people do? We want development of a new generation of medical device data platforms to be attainable to smaller teams with a bigger impact, faster. We want development to be enjoyable and easier. We want our customers to develop unique “information-driven IP” rather than plumbing. By fostering builders and developers at our customers, we offer exponential speed across the segment, bringing value to the patient and the caregiver sooner with each engagement.
