My Advice to Aspiring HNGInternship Interns

HNG Internship is a remote based internship whereby aspiring world-class software developers are subjected to an intensive industrial training usually for a period of three months. It’s organised by Hotels.ng led by Mark Essien in partnership with top tech companies around the globe.

During the 3 months period, the interns are exposed to several practices obtainable in the tech industries, modern developer tools, rapid application development among a host of others. This is achieved by providing real products to be built under strict supervision of highly experienced software Engineers.

At HNG Internship it’s not all about coding, interns are also drilled on the business aspect of coding, how to sight opportunities and translate the idea into a problem solving products (the Do’s and Don’ts of this).

Team collaboration is another fascinating part of this internship, folks from different backgrounds are engaged in team projects. Imagine over 4,000 interns pushing to one repository and the code runs on a live server. This is a great skill for those who can understand the trade-offs. Interns are also exposed to leadership skills by assigning them as team leads of a given project during the course of the internship.

Now, my advice to prospective interns:

• HNG Internship is for all categories of developers, but an absolute beginner will not make most of all the opportunities it presents. This is the hard truth but I must not spare it.
• It’s best if you already have at least a little experience with some basic techs such as HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, BOOTSTRAP, for frontend developers, PHP (LARAVEL is an added advantage), Nodejs for backend developers, and Design basics (Figma is an added advantage) for designers.
• Nevertheless, if you don’t have these skills as mentioned above before the internship, you can also learn a lot, but just know it clearly that it’s not for absolute beginners, if you must hope to make it to the end of the internship.

Conclusion

HNG Internship provides folks who have learnt some skills in different tech fields with the opportunity to work on real products and increase in their experiences. Lest I forget, you can also make some cool cash while on the internship from weekly stipends which is also a function of your hard work.
