If you had to assign colours to your soul, what colours would you choose? I think my choices would be aubergine, periwinkle, wisteria and vermilion. They’re unique, versatile and appeal to my artistic side.

Over time, I’ve learned that all colours are beautiful and believe that, regardless of what we were told as children, they all contribute to the diversity and richness of our visual world. Those that have negative connotations do so because of the subjective nature of beauty, as well as cultural and historical factors.

I grew up avoiding black, grey, and dark brown in my clothes, drawings, paintings and decorations (my mom used to call these boring), but at the same time admiring them from a distance. Black gave me this “elegance” vibe, while greys and dark browns fascinated me. I wondered why we overlook darker colors and shades when they are so abundant in nature.

When I started adult colouring a few months ago, I surprised myself—I used all 24 coloured pencils in the box I bought. I didn’t just use the bright colours I’d been conditioned to think were cool and fun, but also the darker ones, the ones that add visual interest and depth to everything. Whatever my mood, I felt just as comfortable with black as I did with yellow, pink and orange.
