Don’t Let Your Creativity Die From the Lack of Support
String art is teaching me to love the parts of myself that no one claps for
Here I am, in the middle of completing my string art project that I started many weeks ago. This has proved to be the most time-consuming craft I’ve attempted so far, and I’ve had mixed feelings about it from day one. Do I love it? Or do I hate it? I can’t make up my mind yet.
Placing the nails proved frustrating, especially with limited tools. Normally, you would pre-drill the holes for the nails and use a clamp to hold the board in place, but I had limited resources. So I hammered in the nails one at a time, using one of my dad’s old small hammers. As it makes quite a lot of noise and I had to be considerate of my neighbours, I only did this in the late morning and early afternoon.
As I hammered the nails according to the template that came with the kit, I had to adjust the placement of some of the nails — in real life, we often have to adjust our beliefs as we encounter new experiences and perspectives. These beliefs have been ‘hammered’ into us by society, family, and culture, and they shape who we are. But some of them may no longer serve us — and that’s when I realised how important it is not to let your creativity die from the lack of support from others.
